Environmental Consciousness

return

There is a striking (and sometimes surprising) alternative to lumber that is gaining in popularity every day for building everything from residential homes to apartment buildings and shopping malls. That alternative is STEEL. Not only is steel a superior building material to lumber, it helps protect our native forests, one of our most beautiful and valuable natural resources.

Throughout the last 100 years, lumber companies have harvested a staggering portion of our domestic old-growth trees for commercial use. And although lumber is a “renewable” resource and logging companies must now try to replace what is harvested, they will never be able to catch up with over a century of unregulated destruction while at the same time trying to keep up with the demand for lumber. In trying to keep up with this demand, lumber companies are having to replace mature native forests they harvest with fast-growing trees that only need 15 to 20 years to grow.

This has created a sharp decline in the strength and quality of domestic lumber and has forced lumber companies to look elsewhere for old-growth trees – and they found what they were looking for in rainforests.

As responsible consumers, we need to find a more environmentally friendly material for construction and here at Epic, we strongly believe that the superior alternative to lumber is steel. Steel has the distinction of being almost 100% recyclable and as an additional benefit, it takes less energy to recycle the steel from older buildings, automobiles, and appliances than it does to produce steel from iron ore!!

If you feel the same responsibility we do to protect our fragile environment, then we strongly urge you to consider our steel wall and floor truss system for your next project.

Health, Safety, and Security

One of the greatest advantages of using steel rather than lumber to frame your next project is the incredible health benefits provided by steel. In an attempt to compensate for the decline in domestic lumber quality, a great deal of lumber today is treated with toxic chemicals aimed at making the lumber last longer. These chemicals can wreak havoc on the health of you and your family and are best avoided whenever possible. Steel provides the solution to this problem and allows you breathe easy - literally!

The absence of hazardous chemicals is just one of the many health benefits provided by steel. Unlike lumber, steel does not absorb moisture, making it the perfect defense against the propagation of rot and mold that can introduce dangerous bacteria and mold spores into your home. Rot and mold can not only cause your family serious health problems, but they can end up costing you hundreds or even thousands of dollars in damage to your home or business. Another advantage to steel is how many “unwanted guests” such as insects and other pests, termites in particular, have found steel structures extremely unfriendly to their way of life. Again, the potential for cost savings for not having to make structural repairs due to insects is immeasurable. Also, steel is not flammable so the risk of losing your home to fire is greatly reduced. Many insurance companies are starting to catch on to the many benefits provided by steel construction and some have even begun to offer reduced policy rates! For health, safety, and peace of mind, a steel-framed home is the cleanest and safest environment you can provide for your family.

Quality, Strength, and Stability

return

Compared to all other practical materials available for construction in today’s market, you will discover that steel is by far the strongest. At well over 20 times stronger than lumber, steel can support far more weight and resist greater outside forces. Such strength becomes particularly important when your roof becomes buried with snow and ice or when high winds come your way. Another significant advantage to steel is that it does not absorb moisture, therefore it will not bow, warp, swell, creep, shrink, or crack due to changes in temperature and/or moisture. Also, you must use screws instead of nails when attaching drywall, siding, etc. to the steel. This eliminates “nail-pops” and keeps everything held tightly together so you will never again have to cringe when a floorboard creaks in the middle of the night!
